Chapter 20 Fungi Expectations

 

By the end of the chapter you should have the following completed:

 

1.     Be able to define and give an example when appropriate of:

Fungi, hyphae, mycelium, chitin, sporangia (sporangium), Zygomycota, zygospores, sac fungi (Ascomycota), ascus, ascospores, club fungi (Basidiomycota), basidia (basidium), basidiospores, imperfect fungi (Deuteromycota), mycorrhiza, lichen

 

2.     All sections of the chapter should be read with the goal of being able to discuss/explain the information contained in them.

20.1 What is a Fungus?       20.2 Diversity of Fungi

3.     Have the following concept review questions completely answered:

  1. How are hyphae related to mycelium?

  2. What characteristics are used to distinguish fungi from each other?

  3. Give several example of the importance of fungi to humans.

  4. What is meant by the term imperfect fungi?

  5. Who are the partners in a mycorrhizae?  Describe how each partner benefits in a mycorrhizal relationship.

  6. Describe how a fungus obtains nutrients.

  7. Make a chart comparing characterisitics,  reproduction,  and structure of the various fungal phyla.  Also be include at least one example of each phylum.

 

4.     Know how to convert from one unit to another using factor label method.

5.  Record all material presented in class notes and commit them to memory.
