Chapter
17 Organizing Life’s Diversity Expectations
By the end of the chapter
you should have the following completed:
1.
Be able to define and give an example when appropriate of:
Group
A: Classification, Taxonomy,
Aristotle, binomial nomenclature, homologies,
genus, species, kingdom, phylum, order, family, Carolus Linneaus, class
Group
B: Prokaryotes, Eukaryotes, Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protista (protests),
Fungi, Plantae (plants), Animalia (animals)
2.
All sections of the chapter should be read with the goal of being able to
discuss/explain the information contained in them.
17.1
classification
17.2 The six kingdoms
3.
Have the following questions answered using a complete sentence in your
ring binder:
Group 1:
-
For what reasons are biological
classification systems needed?
-
Give two reasons why binomial
nomenclature is useful.
-
What did Linnaeus contribute to
the field of taxonomy?
-
What are the taxa used in
biological classification? Which taxon contains the largest number of species?
Which taxon contains the fewest number of species?
Group 2:
-
How do members of different
kingdoms obtain nutrients?
-
Make a list of the
characteristics that archaebacteria and Eubacteria share.
Then make a list of their differences.
-
Modern systems of classification
place most emphasis on something to determine grouping.
What is it?
4.
Labs to be handed in with discussion questions written out and answered
in complete sentences:

Writing
a Key
5.
Name the 6 kingdoms and give defining characteristics of each.
6.
Given several “organisms” be able to write a biological key for their
identification.
7.
Know how to convert from one unit to another in the metric system using factor
label method.
8.
Know the kingdoms of life and be able to give examples of organisms that
belong in each kingdom.
9.
Record all material covered in class notes and commit them to memory.
Extra Credit: To be
eligible for extra credit you must have all homework completed on time.
You must pass your project in before the test is taken (maximum 3 pts on test)
Make a poster
showing the 6 kingdoms of life. Look
for colorful pictures of members of each kingdom on the internet and include
them in your poster. Correctly
label the kingdoms and organisms. Your
poster should be very neat and interesting to look at.
