Class Expectations

Dear Students:

This paper outlines course expectations for your Anatomy and Physiology class for the 2002-2003 school year.  Please read it carefully because it is the “guts” of your science class.  I am looking forward to a great year!!!

Course:  Anatomy and Physiology

Teacher:  Mrs. Bolvin

Class goals: The goal of this course is for you to gain an appreciation and an understanding of structure and function of the human body.

Text:  Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology

Materials to be brought to class daily:   Covered textbook, notes, something to write with, colored pencils are helpful but not necessary

Academic Expectations:

1.    All school and class rules will be followed.  Discipline decisions will be make according to the student handbook.

2.     Be on time for class.  Be ready to work, cooperate and contribute.  Being prepared for class includes bringing all required materials.  Tardiness will not be accepted.  (3 tardies = one absence)  The third time you are tardy, you will stay after school one half-hour.  For each additional tardy after the third you will have a half-hour detention.  No show for detention without notifying your teacher doubles the time.  Two no shows equals an administrative detention.

3. This class will be conducted much like any college anatomy class.  You will have to take the majority of the responsibility for what you learn in this class.  I will try to help you as much as I can, but you should be advised that my academic standards and expectations for this course are very high.  I try to make them similar to the standards and expectations you will encounter in college to help prepare you for post-graduation study.

4.    You are responsible for all the reading in the chapters we cover even if I don’t talk about it in class.  To make sure you are doing the reading, I will ask a few questions over the material in the book that I did not cover in class.

5.     More than 12 absences for the year = no credit earned

6.     Any test will be announced at least 3 school days before it will be given.  If you are absent for the day we review but were here when the test was announced you will take the test.  If you are absent on test day but were present when the test was announced, you will take the test when the day you return to class. Be prepared. Quizzes may or may not be announced.

7.   Other makeup:  When you return to school after an absence you will be given the number of days that you missed to make up work (with the exception of tests see previous point).  For example, if you miss 2 classes, you will have until the second class after your return to present a blue slip and pass in your completed work.  After that time, you will receive a zero.  It is your responsibility to meet this deadline.

8.     There will be no extra credit in this course.  Try your best the first time.  If your grade doesn’t meet your expectations, try harder next time.  Few college professors will allow you to do extra credit.

9.     You are encouraged to get extra help during study hall or after school. Since lab practicals (identification tests) are part of this course, you are encouraged to attend the open-lab study session.  This will usually take place after school 2 school days before the lab practical will be given. I am usually available before school beginning at 7 a.m. in my office (the biology stockroom).

 Behavioral Expectations:

1.     Please respect school property such as desks, walls, heaters, and lab equipment of all types.  Do not write on the desks even with your eraser.  You will have to wash all the desks in the room as well as all the countertops if you do.

2.  Follow all lab safety rules.   Serious misbehavior may result in removal from lab and loss of lab credit.   I do not hesitate to contact the office and/or parents if necessary.

3.   Since this course contains many labs revolving around dissecting preserved cats, respect for life (or former life) must be demonstrated at all times.  Mutilation of any former living specimen will result in a failing dissection grade and conference with the administration.

4.   Inappropriate language (cussing) will not be tolerated.

5.   Gum chewing is a private experience, not to be shared with others.  As long as I don’t see it, hear it, or smell it, you can do it.

Grading:

          Tests and Practicals                         40%

          Quizzes                                           15%

          Labs and Projects                            30%

          Participation?                                  15%

?--In order to factor in your participation in this class, I will grade you daily on participation.  Your daily participation will be graded as follows

present and participating in a positive manner            2 pts

tardy or present but not participating                         1 pt

not present or absent for >20 minutes of class          0 pts

At the end of the mid-quarter and end of the quarter, your participation grade will be the percent of the total points you could have earned.
